The Australian Services Union has condemned the decision to axe another 23 jobs from its North Geelong head office, after having made over 250 workers redundant just over a year ago.
ASU Victorian Private Sector Branch Secretary, Ingrid Stitt, said that today is a sad and difficult time for the workers and their families who will be most affected by the cuts.
"Target has today announced that they will outsource a number of functions to including Trade Finance, Invoice Processing and the Banking Team resulting in another 23 Target employees losing their jobs. Target has refused to confirm whether the outsourced jobs will be off-shored.
"Target likes to call itself '100 per cent Geelong', where is the loyalty when its people need it most? Target must come clean about where these jobs will be located. This city is going through a gut-wrenching period of unemployment, and here is Target outsourcing jobs that will be located where exactly?
"The Target office consists predominantly of women workers. Infrastructure announcements from governments are not going to help these women find alternative employment in the area?
"These workers don't want charity, they want money to be invested in jobs for the future. We call upon all levels of government, to get serious about a plan for Geelong jobs now," Ms Stitt said.
