We rely on collective strength to improve the working conditions of our members. That way our members have the strength and bargaining power to negotiate the best possible working conditions.
In unionised workplaces we are able to negotiate agreements which provide for above market wages, fair working conditions and better job security. These workplaces are in marked contrast to those where employment conditions are reduced by bosses playing one employee off against another. In many cases, even where wages are relatively good, employees are expected to work overtime and not get paid, or to work unusual hours with no extra reward.
The ASU relies on membership fees to pay for specialised industrial staff to advise and represent members.
Through our collective resources we are able to deliver professional advice to members on industrial matters and represent individuals when they have been unfairly treated, discriminated against. Examples of such representation include where members are unfairly dismissed, where members are bullied or harassed in the workplace, where they are not paid the correct wages, or in situations of redundancy.
The ASU is a national union with strong Branches in every state and territory. Through our Branch based structure we are able to represent local issues on a state by state level and also co-ordinate national campaigns where necessary. The ASU is part of an international network of unions which represent IT workers, known as UNI. That way we are also able to tackle global issues when they arise.
