On the 18th January 2018, Canon informed the workforce that it is making 11 Technicians redundant. Canon says this is because of a general downturn in the industry. The ASU understanding of the breakdown of the redundancies on a State by State basis is as follows:
- 4/39 Technicians in NSW
- 3/12 Technicians in QLD
- 2/21 Technicians in VIC
- 2/6 Technicians in WA
Canon will follow the usual procedure of asking for voluntary expressions of interest (EOI) in a redundancy which closes on Monday 22nd January. If it does not receive sufficient voluntary EOI it may then move to compulsory redundancies.
The ASU will monitor this process and ensure that Canon meets its obligations under the eba regarding Consultation, Redundancies etc. If not enough voluntary EOI are received and Canon moves to compulsory redundancies, the ASU will fight to ensure these redundancies are carried out in a fair and proper manner. Any member who feels aggrieved by this process should contact the union. (see contacts below)
