Qantas has announced that it will outsource below wing work (ramp, baggage and aircraft presentation) at 10 Australian airports. We understand that Qantas considered a TWU-led in-house bid, but rejected that proposal because it did not offer enough cost-savings to the company. We stand in solidarity with all workers affected by this shocking decision.
The outsourced employees are mostly covered by the TWU, but there may be flow on effects for some ASU members (such as in workforce planning). We are working to get as much information as possible from the company about this decision and we will keep you updated.
Qantas management should be ashamed of themselves.
This has been a hard year for all airline Qantas employees. Finally, we are seeing flying beginning to bounce back as borders reopen before the Christmas busy period.
Qantas should be using this time to thank people for their hard work and loyalty. The least they could do would be to offer all of its employees security and certainty in the lead up to Christmas.
The ASU will do everything we can to prevent Qantas management from outsourcing our work.
Pass this bulletin to your friends and colleagues at Qantas. If they aren’t in the union, ask them to join at www.asu.asn.au/ASUJOIN.
