Placement of Rex Airlines into voluntary administration a sign government needs to do more to prioritise regional travel and jobs

31 July 2024 By ASU

The Australian Services Union has called upon the federal government to prioritise regional air travel – a major driver of quality local jobs – in the wake of Rex Airlines being placed in the hands of administrators.

The union, which represents frontline customer service staff across the airline industry, is seeking an urgent meeting with the administrators to ascertain the potential impacts on workers.

“This is obviously a worrying time for hundreds of workers and the ASU will be advocating for their interests and ensuring their voices are heard during this critical time,” said ASU Assistant National Secretary Emeline Gaske.

“The union’s priority will be to work with administrator to try to save as many jobs as possible and ensure our members entitlements are protected.

“It’s particularly concerning that Rex has been placed into administration so closely after the collapse of Bonza – another airline that provided services to regional locations.

“Regional travel not only facilitates access to otherwise isolated communities, but regional airlines play an integral role in providing quality local employment opportunities.

“The government must take steps to prioritise regional air travel routes – too many jobs are dependent upon a thriving airlines industry.”
